Vodafone Netherlands deploys cloud-based VoLTE network

    -

Vodafone Netherlands has deployed a cloud-based VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling service.

The operator is using Ericsson’s virtualised IP multimedia subsystem and evolved packet core, as well as its virtual network functions for Wi-Fi calling, policy control and application server domain.

Ericsson said the deployment meant Vodafone Netherlands could launch services quicker and deliver a higher quality of customer experience.

Wi-Fi calling means Vodafone Netherlands will be able to supplement its macro coverage by offering reception in the likes of basements. VoLTE has quicker set up times than conventional voice calling and will also allow Vodafone to offer IP-based services such as video calling over LTE and multi-device support.

Matthias Sauder, Head of Networks, Vodafone Netherlands, said: “Network virtualisation brings huge opportunities for efficiency and agility. It will allow us to introduce new services more rapidly to our subscribers.”

Valter D’Avino, Head of Western and Central Europe, Ericsson, said: “Ericsson has deployed a VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling system that can automatically scale within a telecom cloud and fulfill telecom-grade service availability. It provides Vodafone with a complete solution to evolve their voice and SMS business toward an all-IP communications network based in the cloud”.

Research from IHS that was published earlier this week revealed VoLTE deployments have helped the carrier voice over IP and IP multimedia subsystem markets hit an all-time high in the fourth quarter of last year.
