VIDEO: LTE “important” to the IoT, says Orange exec

    -

LTE has an important role to play in the Internet of Things, an Orange executive has claimed.

In a video interview with Mobile Europe, Jean-Pierre Casara, the French operator’s 4G Innovation Director, Technocentre, said the industry can connect other industries with existing telco technology, instead of waiting for 5G.

“When we talk with IoT companies, they don’t really think about 4G. They think about Wi-Fi or Bluetooth…What we are trying to do is make it more friendly,” said Casara.

The video was filmed at last week’s LTE World Summit, where delegates were told that they needed to deal with their legacy infrastructure.

Orange recently launched its 4G Kit for IoT, which was built by Bell Labs, in a bid to foster interest among companies wishing to take advantage of a connected future.

The company is one of several operator investors in IoT specialist Actility, which builds Low Power Wide Area networks. The company is targeting the likes of the energy sector with its technology.
