Telstra, Ericsson, Ciena demo secure optical encryption

    -

Telstra, Ericsson and Ciena have held a successful demonstration of new optical encryption technology that they claimed safeguards the transmission of data.

The trial involved data travelling along Telstra’s network between Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. Ericsson provided systems integration to enable the use of Ciena’s new WaveLogic Encryption solution.

The companies said new kinds of encryption technology are needed given the increase in data coming from cloud networks. Protected data is seen as particularly important for enterprises, who want data to be scured as it moves from the private cloud onto mobile networks.

David Robertson, Director, Transport and Routing Engineering, at Telstra, said: “Proving the functionality of this new encryption technology is important for Telstra to offer this additional service to our enterprise customers who need extra security levels. This programmable solution provides the option of self-managed encryption and Telstra-managed encryption. This alleviates our customers having to manage and pay for developing this service themselves.”

Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, said: “Ericsson systems integration expertise ensures the Ciena equipment is optimised and supported across Telstra’s production environment. To achieve this, thorough tests were first carried-out in Ericsson’s optical test lab in Port Melbourne to warrant seamless integration of Ciena’s equipment into Telstra’s production network.”

Francois Locoh-Donou, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ciena, added: “Businesses today recognise the importance of securing data not only inside the enterprise, but also as it leaves the private cloud and traverses across the network, without adding latency or sacrificing the end user experience.”
