Telcos throw weight behind LTE-broadcast by joining tech alliance

    -

The LTE-broadcast ecosystem has been boosted by telcos including TIM, Turkcell, Ericsson and Nokia joining an industry alliance promoting the technology.

Ten telcos have joined founder members Verizon, Telstra, kt and EE in the LTE-B Alliance, representing a total of more than 370 million mobile subscribers. Other new members include HKT and CSL Mobile, Reliance JIO, Smartfren, Expway, Huawei, NETGEAR and the GSA.

Operators within the alliance, which was unveiled in April, are producing a white paper on the technology and its device and use-case requirements, with a view to build common device design.

LTE-B enables operators to send a single stream of data to numerous mobile users in a single area.

The alliance said it would explore a range of potential use cases for the technology, including critical push notifications, dynamic digital signage, the Internet of Things and value-added services in 5G.

Matt Stagg, Head of Video Strategy at EE said: “The announcement today shows just how much global support there is for LTE-B technology and we welcome the new partners to this growing alliance. At EE, we’ve been investing in LTE-B for the last few years to deliver high-quality video experiences to our customers during large events, where data demands and network capacity are at their highest. Next year, we’ll be deploying new LTE-B technology to further develop our live entertainment services and deliver buffer-free HD video whenever and wherever our customers want it.”
