Nokia to demonstrate 10Gbps mmWave, new phased array tech

-

Nokia Networks is to showcase 5G speeds of 10GBps during a demonstration of 73GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) technology alongside a new Phased Array Antenna prototype from Mitsubishi.

The demonstrations will take place during the second annual Brooklyn 5G Summit in New York. They will aim to show how new spectrum bands can be used to support ultra-low latency applications such as augmented reality, connected cars and tactical internet.

The vendor said it hopes its 10Gbps 2ร—2 MIMO system will show how โ€œextremely fastโ€ broadband speeds will pave the way for 3D, 8K-quality films and the ability to download full-length HD movies โ€œin a matter of seconds rather than minutesโ€.

The vendor will also demonstrate how massive MIMO and โ€œbeamsteeringโ€ can be achieved using phased array technology, using a new Active Phased Array Antenna (APAA) prototype from Mitsubishi.

Beam-steering control, which uses four beams, will be achieved by connecting Mitsubishiโ€™s APAA prototype to Nokia Networksโ€™ base station using the 3.5GHz frequency band, Nokia said.

Lauri Oksanen, VP of Research and Technology at Nokia Networks, said: โ€œ5G mobile network speeds as high as 10Gbps and with extremely low latency are a driving force for massive mobile broadband and totally new applications in the future Programmable World.

โ€œWeโ€™re excited to showcase these achievements with our partners. Our progress, coupled with the joint organisation of the Brooklyn 5G Summit, underscores our commitment to be a leader in 5G.โ€

Other topics being explored at the summit include spectrum resources above the 6GHz band, with Nokia also revealing plans to show off a โ€œhigh bandwidth systemโ€ using new spectrum bands.

A new report from ABI Research this week claimed mmWave technology was driving the small cell backhaul market to an estimated worth of โ‚ฌ3.7 billion by 2020.
