Finland’s TREX exchanges get Nokia upgrade from NetNordic

    -

Meet the new NOS not the same as the old NOS – it sees everything at hyper speed and instantly acts on that intelligence for TREX

Telco service provider NetNordic has won the contract to upgrade the TREX regional internet exchanges in TampereFinland.
Nokia is supplying its 7220 Interconnect Routers which will run its own specialised version of the SR Linux network operating system to upgrade its network. According to Wikipedia the primary TREX switch is currently an Arista Networks low-latency 10Gbit/s cut-through switch, which connects communications service providers and ISPs using their own SFP or SFP+ module to match their connection options for speed, distance and Wavelength division multiplexing. There are a number of smaller secondary switches, which are mostly used for TREX’s services and a couple of ISPs connecting over 1000Base-T.

Nokia the old kit out the park

Aleksi Suhonen, Chairman of TREX, explained why they went over to Nokia for the upgrade: “It meets our requirements for a scalable, cost-effective interconnection platform with advanced network operations capabilities. The new platform will meet increasing customer traffic needs through network automation,” said Suhonen.

    TREX of my tiers

Nokia’s Linux promises to give TREX an open and powerful system for collecting operations data, using push-based streaming telemetry. This operations data comprises intelligence on fine-grained system states, configuration settings and instant network analytics. This is crucial for Suhonen’s team at TREX because it allows them to automate their current and future network service, using the automation framework that comes within the Nokia SR Linux.

Stars of Trex will boldly go

TREX is expanding its regional interconnection capabilities to meet the needs of its customers as they embrace new digital and cloud technologies, said Manuel Ortiz Fernandez, Nokia’s Webscale business SVP. TREX was established in 2002 and traffic on its first switch started in 2003 and is a member of the European Internet Exchange Association. It tries to provide both a service platform and a research platform for the Internet and has taken part in a number of research projects where it provided public Teredo server and relay and NAT64 test services.
