Ericsson and Intel have held an end-to-end 5G data call, which they said brings the telecoms’ industry one step closer to the commercial deployment of 5G.
The demonstration was held at Ericsson’s lab in Kista, Sweden last week with the call taking place on both the downlink and uplink streams.
The test used Ericsson’s commercially available 5G New Radio, baseband and packet core products, as well as Intel’s 5G Mobile Trial Platform, which the Swedish vendor said would help operators quickly deploy the latest air interfaces and communication protocols.
Nishant Batra, Head of Product Area Networks at Ericsson, said: “The work carried out by Ericsson engineers together with our partners is laying the groundwork for the commercial readiness of 5G. We continue to drive the establishment of an ecosystem that will ensure this technology is a commercial success.”

Asha Keddy, Vice President and General Manager of Next Generation and Standards, Intel, added: “Ericsson and Intel have demonstrated a successful 5G NR non-standalone data call, which serves as another powerful proof point that commercial 5G is at hand.”
The demonstration is the latest piece of 5G research Ericsson has been involved in. Last week it teamed up with Åland Islands operator Ålcom to demonstrate the interoperability of 5G New Radio technology.
It is also virtualising Wind Tre’s network as part of the Italian operator’s preparation for 5G.
