DT Group goes with Nokia to get “5G-ready” in affiliate markets

    -

Nokia’s 7750 Service Router portfolio will replace and upgrade IP edge and core networks, starting in Greece and Hungary.

Deutsche Telekom Group (DT) is to deploy Nokia’s 7750 Service Router (SR) platform to expand capacity across its edge and core routing network as it prepares to roll out 5G.

Implement has started in Greece and is expected to begin in Hungary by the end of this calendar year.

A key goal is to consolidate network layers by integrating IP aggregation, and the edge and broadband network gateway functions into a single layer.

Nokia said that the DT opcos will be able to support 5G interconnectivity and the expected rise backbone traffic driven by more mobility applications, remote working, video streaming, gaming and other high-capacity uses.

    Platform-based

The 7750 SR-s is managed by the Nokia’s Network Services Platform which supports 5G IP transport with automated slicing across IP and optical transport layers. It orchestrates network resource provisioning and assurance operations, from end to end.

The vendor claims this simplifies operations, enabling network operators to offer customers policies and slices with different network performance, quality and routing capabilities.

    Tremendous growth

Bernhard Scholl, Technology Europe VP Access Core & Transport at Deutsche Telekom, said, “Deutsche Telekom Group affiliates need to expand and modernise their IP networks to address stringent 5G IP transport requirements.

“We continue to see tremendous growth in network traffic and the need to deliver more throughput and higher capacity with strict QoS to our customers is critical.

“This is particularly the case as bandwidth-intensive applications are shifting to on-demand video along with the growing usage of cloud-based services. Building out this backbone with Nokia’s IP edge routers will allow us to stay ahead of our customers’ network needs.”
