Vodafone Germany trials new intelligent mobile access software

    -

Vodafone Germany has demoed a new intelligent mobile access solution, which aims to connect consumers quicker via Wi-Fi or cellular.

The operator worked with Cisco and Chemring Technology Solutions on the trial. The technology automatically switches between cellular and Wi-Fi, after tracking the time and location of connection, as well as the loads on mobile or Wi-Fi networks.

The technology also used algorithms to measure historical data and track whether legacy congestion data could affect performance.

Cisco provided its Network Intelligence Software for the trial, which also used Chemring’s intelligent device software. The software runs in the background, measuring the performance of local mobile and Wi-Fi networks, as well as automatically logging a user into Wi-Fi.

Consumers are also able to alter the settings in the technology, to allow them to automatically connect to home networks.

A Cisco spokesperson said: “This helps Vodafone, a provider of fast, high-performance fixed and mobile networks, push ahead with the integration of its mobile and Wi-Fi infrastructure. Customers would benefit from simpler, trouble-free use of their devices while maintaining the same high, stable connection quality.”

Yesterday, Liberty Global revealed it was extending its automated connectivity partnership with Devicescape to allow its customers to automatically connect to W-Fi hotspots.

In 2014, Liberty Global subsidiary Virgin Media used the Devicescape software to improve connectivity to its UK customers.

A recent report from ABI Research said indoor data traffic will increase by 600 percent between now and 2020, highlighting the continuing need for Wi-Fi as well as cellular.
