    TIM and Ericsson trial native-cloud tech to speed 5G development

    -

TIM, in collaboration with Ericsson, has successfully tested a 5G cloud-native core network with the aim of accelerating the evolution of TIM’s 5G infrastructure.

    The operator said the experiments in its labs at Turin will enable it to adopt solutions for advanced operational management of the network and implement a service-based software architecture.

    Tests investigated procedures for:

    • monitoring and transmitting data traffic, defined by the international 3GPP standards;

    • solutions for the automatic creation and configuration of network functions;

    • the automatic repair of faults; and

    • updating the core network on a live network.

    Fundamental step

    TIM said the adoption of native-cloud represents a fundamental step in the development of new 5G services, allowing it to optimise network resources in a dynamic, immediate and automatic way.

    This includes being able to guarantee the quality of requested services, and bringing the network intelligence and applications close to the customer through edge computing.

    Paolo Snidero, Head of Technology Architectures & Innovation at TIM stated, “This important result…confirms the company’s technological leadership and commitment to [guaranteeing] our customers the best experience of communication through the 5G Digital Business Platform development, that can also enable edge computing solutions.

    “This project underlines TIM’s network infrastructure quality, the most advanced and able to exploit 5G full potential “.

    Andrea Missori, Key Account Manager Digital Services of Ericsson, said, “The teams’ skills…and the new software’s features have allowed the deployment of a whole core network in a few minutes. The result achieved in TIM’s laboratories in Turin shows that we are ready to face the 5G challenge in terms of network speed and flexibility, fundamental for the launch of innovative services for consumers and companies”.
