Intel targets LTE-A and 5G with new modems

    -

Intel has launched new modems for 5G and LTE as operators prepare to upgrade their networks.

The new XMM 8000 series is the chipmaker’s first line of multi-mode 5G modems, which support sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum bands.

They are designed to connect devices including smartphones, PCs, CPE and vehicles to 5G.

The flagship product in the new portfolio is the XMM 8060, Intel’s first commercial 5G modem.

The 8060 provides support for both standalone and non-standalone flavours of 5G, as well as 2G, 3G and 4G.

The chipset is set to ship in consumer devices in mid-2019, helping to lay the groundwork for the broader launch of 5G services in 2020.

Intel has also introduced another chipset in its LTE series, the XMM 7660, which features Cat-19 capabilities.

Set to ship in 2019, the XMM 7660 will allow devices to reach speeds of up to 1.6GBps.

“Intel is committed to delivering leading 5G multi-mode modem technology and making sure the transition to 5G is smooth,” said Cormac Conroy, GM of the Communication and Devices Group at Intel.

“Our investments in a full portfolio of modem technologies and products are critical to achieving the vision of seamless 5G connectivity.”

Sandra Rivera, GM of Intel’s Network Platforms Group, added: “Today’s wireless networks are the equivalent of data driving down a single-lane highway; tomorrow’s will need to serve as a multilane superhighway as data moves at warp speed with 5G networks.

“Our roadmap progress shows how Intel is moving at gigabit speeds to help the industry create this superhighway and benefit from the speed, capacity and low latency that 5G promises.”

In September, Intel announced its 5G Mobile Trial Platform, an end-to-end test kit for 5G networks, would be the first to support upcoming non-standalone 5G standards.
