Magyar Telekom debuts 5G New Radio in Hungary

    -

Magyar Telekom has held a demonstration of 5G New Radio technology with Ericsson and hit download speeds of 22GBps.

The demonstration took place during the vendor’s annual Innovation Day, which was held at its R&D Centre in Budapest, Hungary.

The trial was held on the 15GHz band with 800MHz bandwidth and is the first time a 5G radio link has been established in the country. The New Radio powered beamforming that enabled point to point data transmission at the multi-gigabit speeds.

Both telcos, as well as Hungarian government bodies, universities and other network equipment vendors, are part of a Hungarian 5G Coalition that aims to bring out the successful introduction of the technology.

Kim Kyllesbech Larsen, CTIO, Magyar Telekom said: “5G means a brand new network concept which combines fixed and mobile communication. Its potential lies not in the speed only but in the built-in network intelligence and the collaboration with other technologies.

“5G opens up new opportunities also for the operators and thus for Magyar Telekom to offer services connected with IoT and robotics for different sectors like the car industry, health or public service, agriculture, etc.

“The 5G Coalition tasks to make Hungary one of the European hubs for 5G tests and developments and our joint demonstration with Ericsson Hungary is a good example of the collaboration needed to achieve our goals concerning 5G.”

European operators are speeding up their trials of 5G New Radio technology as they look to roll it out next year. Deutsche Telekom recently used the technology in a 5G testbed in Berlin.

Orange Spain has also recently deployed 5G New Radio, hitting speeds of 15GBps.
