EE customers will benefit from clearer and more robust calls after the UK operator rolled out an upgrade to its VoIP services.
Enhanced HD Voice will now provide users of VoWi-Fi and VoLTE with higher sound quality and resilience to disruption.
The operator has added the latest 3GPP-standardised compression technology for voice to its IP Multimedia subsystem platform. According to the specification body, this codec offers speech quality that matches stored music.
The capability will initially be available on Apple’s new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus devices, which launched today in the UK.
EE said other handsets offering Enhanced HD Voice will be available in the next few months.
Max Taylor, MD of Marketing at EE, said: “We launch the very latest technologies so that EE customers get the best performance on the latest smartphones.
“We already have 4G in more places than any other UK operator, and we have the fastest 4G speeds for streaming, downloading and sharing. Now we’re launching Enhanced HD Voice so that calls are of the highest quality and the most reliable they’ve ever been.”
All UK MNOs now offer both VoLTE and VoWi-Fi.
EE was the first UK operator to launch Wi-Fi calling services that were built into the user’s generic phone application, as opposed to requiring a dedicated app.
However, rival Three beat it in launching VoLTE through its 4G Super-Voice service.
