O2 brings Wi-Fi to the London Eye

    -

O2 has rolled out its Wi-Fi solution to the London Eye, claiming its the first free service on a continually moving structure.

The operator is using the kind of technology it has already deployed in Manchester City’s Etihad stadium and the Twickenham rugby stadium in west London.

It said it is the first deployment of its kind not to use fixed cables or satellite technology to deliver connectivity.

O2 worked with Cambridge Communication Systems and KC2 Networks on the microwave design and installation.

Using CCS’s self-organising mesh comprising 14 microwave nodes and 28GHz spectrum, data connectivity is provided through 16 wireless access points installed across the London Eye which in turn serve two capsules each.

The service is open to all mobile customers and not just O2 subscribers. Visitors to the Eye need to register using their mobile number while O2 customers connect automatically.

Robert Franks, Director of Digital at O2, said: “We’re delighted to help Merlin Entertainments take their customers’ experiences to new heights. Our innovative, high density O2 Wifi solution is a world-first, offering seamless connectivity for customers throughout the iconic London Eye adventure.

“So whether it’s sharing a selfie, posting a photo of the stunning skyline or finding information about London attractions, visitors will be able to do this seamlessly and for free as they go around.”

O2 also recently worked with Vodafone in deploying a Wi-Fi network across the City of London, the main financial hub of the UK’s capital.

Last month, Ericsson announced plans to install a Wi-Fi network at Chelsea Football Club in west London, which it said could prove a vital step in developing 5G.
