Telenor looks to NEC to deploy fresh microwave tech

    -

Telenor is to deploy new microwave communication systems across its global markets after signing a partnership agreement with NEC.

The deal will apply to the operator’s 13 markets across Europe and Asia, and extends upon microwave agreements in place since 2006. Telenor said it wanted to deploy microwaves in order to strengthen its transport network.

In the first stage of the partnership, NEC will provide its “ultra-compact” iPASOLINK product to Telenor’s Pakistan opco, before extending its product range into the operator’s other markets.

NEC will also provide maintenance services to Telenor during the next five years for the system.

Atsuo Kawamura, Executive Vice President, NEC Corporation, said: “With NEC’s iPASOLINK, Telenor can enhance network connectivity, enabling their customers to experience better, high-quality services.

“NEC will continue to provide advanced solutions to Telenor, including microwave equipment, IP routers and optical communications systems, so that we can contribute to the diversification and sophistication of their communication services.”

The two companies have been working together since the 1980s, with NEC claiming the largest share of the operator’s use of microwave communication systems.

Earlier this month, Greek operator Cosmote said it was turning to microwaves in a bid to connect the more remote islands in its home market.

The operator is deploying Nokia’s 9500 Microwave Packet Radio as it looks to increase backhaul capacity and speed.

It is also trialling separate microwave technology with Huawei.
