Ericsson teams up with SpeedCast to deliver satellite connectivity to ships

    -

Ericsson is planning to deliver satellite communications to the maritime sector after selecting SpeedCast as its connectivity partner.

The Swedish vendor, which announced this morning the appointment of a new CEO, said the deal would extend its end-to-end managed services for its shipping, ports and terminal customers by using SpeedCast’s network. Among the potential areas Ericsson will explore is connectivity solutions that aim to increase sales and reduce costs, analytics, and a satellite and ground-based network that will offer connectivity across multiple frequency bands between ship and shore.

John Taxgaard, Head of Maritime, Customer Group Industry & Society, Ericsson, said: “SpeedCast provides us a flexible business model that fits our needs. The possibility of joining their connectivity platform and the resulting availability is a great fit for our managed services solutions. We are very pleased to have SpeedCast as our partner and we foresee huge benefits and successful implementations for both sides.”

Meanwhile, a separate strategic partnership with maritime software solutions company Pole Star has been signed in a bid to extend Ericsson’s offerings to the sector.

Ericsson said it would offer customers the likes of ICT transformation, networking, cloud, mobility, management and regulatory compliance.

Taxgaard said: “Ericsson is excited to partner with Pole Star as we continue to offer innovative solutions and services for the maritime sector. Our two companies share the same vision for the use of regulatory information and how this might be developed and leveraged by other industries.

“Initially, our partnership will focus on joint development and commercialization. For Ericsson, this partnership also underpins the strategy we have developed over the past several years, and it is a key move forward in our own digital transformation.”
